Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the Struggle for America’s Independence by Carol Berkin

Released 2006.02.14   | Finished 2024.06.06  | Purchased

Note: A number of lectures are available on YouTube regarding this book, one hosted by American Revolution Institute dated January 7, 2016

As Dr. Berkin points out in one of the YouTube discussions of this book, women were not merely observers of the American Revolution. They did not sit on the sideline like at a football game and cheer on the participants or specific plays/actions within the battles. Whether a camp follower or the female at the home/business front regardless of her race or social standing, women were participants.

Dr. Berkin looked at the women on the North American continent as they were involved and how they were treated in the Revolution. Patriots vs Loyalists; well-to-do vs poor; White vs Indian vs Black.

Women were in contact with both sides of the conflict. If she had stayed on the farm regardless of her success in maintaining the acres, troops came through like locusts taking what they could use. If the woman was lucky, raiding the larder was the only crime against her. Some of these ladies would destroy their work rather than have it stolen. Camp followers of both sides included colonial women in multiple capacities and for protection. Some found themselves taking water on the battleground as refreshment for men or cooling cannon.

Dr. Berkin’s examples of the situations women were varied and not the ones usually cited in history books written by men. She examined archives for information that was designated as ‘other’ to find information left by women. She also examined oral histories that were generally designated to the outer boundaries of history.

Recommendation: Excellent for women’s studies classes (at least they were called that 20 years ago) and for background/groundwork in American history. The book is finding an audience as the nation nears its 250th anniversary.

Right Behind Her (Bree Taggert series # 4) by Melinda Leigh

Released 2021.09.14   | Finished 2024.03.19   | Borrowed from local public library

Bree Taggert returned to Grey Hollow, Randolph Co, New York following the death of her sister Erin. Erin’s death left her children without an adult to raise them. She had taken the job of sheriff, a job that she was qualified for after having served on the force in Philadelphia. Bree had been raised in this town until her father had killed her mother and then himself when Bree was eight. That incident left Erin and infant brother Adam orphans. The community had a long memory.

Now twenty-seven years later, human bones were discovered on the property that her parents owned. And now, her brother Adam owned the property. Stories quickly race across the county as Bree begins investigating. What is the age of the bones? Was Adam a killer like his father, Jake? Was Jake the killer? Once the bones are determined to be of a woman and a man who both disappeared in June of 1990, Adam’s name comes off the list – he was only month’s old at that time. However, names multiply on that list as it is determined that the woman was a socialite in the county and the man known for his list of crimes. It is also a time period for which Jake Taggert was a suspect.

If the reader gets interested in the tribulations of Bree and her co-workers, there seven books in the series in print with plans for an additional three at this time.

Writing for Busy Readers: Communicate More Effectively in the Real World by Todd Rogers and Jessica Lasky-Fink

Released 2023.09.05          | Finished 2024.03.17         | Borrowed from local library

For someone who writes, hopefully, effectively every day, reading what professionals have to say about the task and how to do so in a way to get and keep readers is important. I’ve just shut you out or put you to sleep with my first sentence. It is way too long and contorted I am told.

The authors premise for writers:

  • Writers have to write for people who think they can multitask – inefficiently and a fallacy. When writing, the writer should consider those who are ‘multitasking’ to reduce stress.
  • Getting that initial attention while the reader is internally deciding whether, when, how, and benefits reading any piece of communication (factors include sender, size of content, packaging).

The message is covered in 207 pages. The authors follow the guidelines they prescribe. This is followed by a one-page appendix with a website address to address word alternatives. The obligatory acknowledgements are two pages. The twenty-two pages of notes (i.e. footnotes) act as the ‘meat’ of the book for those who are doing similar research.

This is a must read for anyone who tries to communicate on a daily basis. (And for these people, a highly suggested purchase for your working library on your desk.) Even those proficient in the use of words might want a copy of this by their copy of Strunk and White The Elements of Style.

The Authors

Todd Rogers’ biography on the book jacket states that he is at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government as a professor oof public policy. He is a cofounder of the Analyst Institute and EveryDay Labs. His writing has been published in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Politico, and others.

Jessica Lasky-Fink’s biography on the book jacket states she is a research director on the same campus in the People Lab. Her work focuses on proving information with government programs and services.

The Sign of Four Spirits (A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery) by Vicki Delany

Released 2024.01.09   | Finished 2024.03.04  | Borrowed from local library

A traveling New England psychic fair has made a stop in New London. Tourists have descended on the town in their search for psychic information and to have a séance with a medium to contact a dearly departed. The Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, owned by Gemma Doyle, has been inundated by those tourists who are looking for additional help in their quest since they have been informed or reminded that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle believed in spiritualism. (The local reminder of that relationship was by Donald Morris, a friend of Gemma, who is a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast.) Sections of books are being bought up making it necessary for Gemma to special order available books to refill the book shelves.

Donald and his current close friend, Bunny Leigh, have asked Gemma to go with them to see a medium with the group, Madam Lavalier. Gemma repeatedly refuses until one of her employees, Ashleigh, and Gemma’s best friend and business partner, Jayne Wilson, convince her to go. When they arrive, other members of the invited or paying guest wait for the medium to make an appearance. Those guests include the hostess, Rebeca Stanton, Jayne Wilson, Bunny Leigh (née Leigh Saunderson), Ashleigh (daughter of Bunny), Donald Morris, Daniel and Eleanor Stanton (son ad daughter-in-law of Rebecca), Max and Larissa Greenwood (tourists), Miranda (employee of Jayne and niece of Rebecca), Gemma, and Mary Moffat (Madam Lavalier’s assistant). When Madam appears, it is determined that the séance cannot have thirteen at the table and Madam insists that Gemma must sit out.

During the séance behind closed doors and during a rather noisy thunderstorm, Madam Lavalier dies. Gemma quickly assesses the situation and has the guests stay while waiting for the police to arrive. Shortly after the first officers arrive, the detectives arrive – Detectives Ryan Ashburton and Louise Estrada.

From that point, attendees are questioned, their answers evaluated, and their backgrounds searched while the personalities that readers have come to appreciate continue their interaction with each other – involving the case and involving their relationships to each other.

The expected cast of characters include:

Gemma Doyle – partner/co-owner of The Holmes Bookshop and Emporium and The Hudson’s Tea Room (sharing an open door between them for customers to use)

Jayne Wilson – partner/co-owner of The Hudson’s Tea Room and Gemma’s best friend

Sir Arthur Doyle – partner/co-owner of The Holmes Bookshop and Emporium and great-uncle of Gemma’s

Ryan Ashburton – New London police detective, love interest of Gemma

Louisa Estrada – Ashburton’s partner, instant distrust of Gemma

Donald Morris – former lawyer, now Holmes enthusiast and reenactor

Moriarty – black cat that guards the bookstore, he encourages everyone to touch him except Gemma.

Betrayal (a Robin Lockwood novel) by Phillip Margolin

I know better than to pick up a Margolin when I have a deadline to meet.

We revisit our past in many ways – sometimes even voluntarily. Robin Lockwood had met Mandy Kerrigan ten years prior in an MMA match. At the time Mandy was on her way to a world title and Robin was a first year law student. It was Robin’s last professional match. Her ambition got in front of advice to her misfortune. It was Robin’s first and only loss.

Now, Robin is a practicing attorney with an exceptionally good reputation and Mandy is a down and out former title holder. She continues to fight because she has no other means of making a living. For a fight – to which Robin and DA friend Tom McGill attend – Mandy’s urine test is positive for drugs, The man she bought the drugs from had promised it would not indicate on a drug test. Her purse and livelihood are in limbo when she tracked the dealer down and put him down with a couple of well-placed punches in front of witnesses. A bystander called the police; however, the dealer, Ryan Finch, did not place charges.

It was not surprising that when the dealer and his family were murdered, the police would find Mandy’s residence. She asked Robin to see her in jail for an opinion, Mandy did not have enough money to cover more than an hour’s consultation. Robin listened to Mandy; then she visited Judge Harold Wright to get an appointment as Mandy’s public defender.

This is the seventh Robin Lockwood novel, following The Third Victim, The Perfect Alibi, A Reasonable Doubt, A Matter of Life and Death, The Darkest Place, and Murder at Black Oaks. The reoccurring characters include DAs Mike Grene and Tom McGill, Detectives Carrie Anders and Roger Dillon, co-council Amanda Jaffe, Associate Loretta Washington, and investigator Ken Breland. One aspect the reader and suspect can expect and appreciate from all of these characters is ethics to a fault and professionalism at what they do. And they respect one another. The reader or suspect wants them on the job.

I know better than to pick up a Margolin when I have a deadline to meet. And yet, I did it again. In a who-done-it with so many suspects, there are so many motives against all the possible suspects – in other words, the ‘victims’ were hardly victims in their everyday lives – it is difficult to choose which one really did it. The reader would really like almost all of the suspects to take the fall.

The First Ladies – a novel by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

The novel is about the relationship of Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune with background noise from FDR and the friends, family, and acquaintances of both ladies. The reader meets two headstrong women from opposite backgrounds. They have common ground in a desire to educate the country’s youth to be responsible and knowledgeable citizens. The reader learns how Black Americans turned from the Republican Party to the Democrat Party. These two women raised their family under their own particular obstacles. These two leaders made each other stronger in the societies that they worked in. Stories were shared that may not be public knowledge.

First, the book was a gift from a beloved cousin. I am not sure where she heard about the book. On my own, I would have bypassed it. What is the saying – you should not judge a book by its cover? I would have bypassed it after reading the flap of the jacket cover. There are very few books that I read outside of the adventure-romance area and the Revolutionary War history area which I am researching. To have missed this would have been a loss, thank you, cousin.

Another reason I would not have picked the book is the great dislike my mother had for Eleanor Roosevelt. Mom was born in 1917. Her teen years were under the Roosevelt administration; mom was the 3rd or 4th child (not sure if her older half-sister was in the household) and was forced out of school after completing the 8th grade to work at selling newspapers on a street corner and helping with laundry that her mother took in to help support the family (there would eventually be 10 of children). And, then the war pulled her new husband into the service. Mom was a very preceptive woman (it took her less than 30 seconds to judge a person in a face-to-face meeting, and she was about 99% on target). So, it was eye-opening to see Mrs. Roosevelt in other terms and from another perspective. I am not so sure Mom would have changed her opinion if she knew all in which Mrs. Roosevelt was involved or dealt with.
