Revolutionary Mothers: Women in the Struggle for America’s Independence by Carol Berkin

Note: A number of lectures are available on YouTube regarding this book, one hosted by American Revolution Institute dated January 7, 2016

As Dr. Berkin points out in one of the YouTube discussions of this book, women were not merely observers of the American Revolution. They did not sit on the sideline like at a football game and cheer on the participants or specific plays/actions within the battles. Whether a camp follower or the female at the home/business front regardless of her race or social standing, women were participants.

Dr. Berkin looked at the women on the North American continent as they were involved and how they were treated in the Revolution. Patriots vs Loyalists; well-to-do vs poor; White vs Indian vs Black.

Women were in contact with both sides of the conflict. If she had stayed on the farm regardless of her success in maintaining the acres, troops came through like locusts taking what they could use. If the woman was lucky, raiding the larder was the only crime against her. Some of these ladies would destroy their work rather than have it stolen. Camp followers of both sides included colonial women in multiple capacities and for protection. Some found themselves taking water on the battleground as refreshment for men or cooling cannon.

Dr. Berkin’s examples of the situations women were varied and not the ones usually cited in history books written by men. She examined archives for information that was designated as ‘other’ to find information left by women. She also examined oral histories that were generally designated to the outer boundaries of history.

Recommendation: Excellent for women’s studies classes (at least they were called that 20 years ago) and for background/groundwork in American history. The book is finding an audience as the nation nears its 250th anniversary.

The fourth book in the series – the previous being Danger in Numbers, Crimson Summer, and Shadow of Death – the main characters Agent Amy Larson of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) on loan to the FBI and Special Agent Hunter Forrest of the FBI have been solving cases that use the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. This case is the pale horseman, the final. The agents with the help of members of the FDLE have been able to identify the first three horsemen and hope that the fourth will lead them to the mastermind behind the crimes, the Archangel.

In this case, the crimes involve a presidential candidate who is trying to bring the left and the right to the bargaining table. He advocates bringing opposing sides together, listening to both arguments of an issue, and negotiating a compromise. The candidate, Frank Hamilton, has drawn support from a group known as the Commonsense Party who are tired of the extremes of the political parties and lack of compromise.

When bodies are found in the Everglades that are members of the Commonsense Party and ties to a previously unknown church, the investigation includes Larson and Forrest when a pale horse is found in the hand of one of the deceased. The investigation looks at Hamilton’s group when it is discovered that some of the murder victims and kidnapped victims were ‘recruited’ during rallies for Hamilton.

Unfortunately for the agents and the team of agencies involved, the team cannot complete an area before new ones are found. Unluckily for the Archangel, the team is made of local police, tribal police, state police, and federal police. There will be no jurisdictional issues in making an arrest if the culprit can be identified and verified.

Defense attorney Jane Smith has a client that she cannot control, and she does not believe. He is a rich, privileged, spoiled, married man who is on trial for the murder a young woman and her parents. The more information her partner-investigator, Jimmy Cunniff, discovers, the more guilty the client, Rob Jacobson, looks. The client’s behavior is very indicative of a person who thinks he can do anything he wants, say anything he wants, and be immune to the people who will judge him in the press and in the courtroom. Perhaps, the only situation that keeps out of more trouble is that he is locked up from arrest until trial.

Jane is running a defense after she learns from her best woman friend and doctor that she has cancer in her neck and head. Jane wants to finish the trial before she starts treatment thinking that the case may be her last. Up until the time of this trial, she has won all her court cases, but so has the district attorney, and they are both good at what they do.

Many twists and turns.

It Had to Be You (Under Suspicion series) by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke

Released 2024.04.16   | Finished 20234.04.23            | Borrowed from local library

If you have any immediate deadlines, stay away from this title!

The new story for the Under Suspicion news crew involves a near ten-year old cold case. Twins dubbed the Deadly Duo have been under suspicion of killing their parents.

Ten years ago, Sarah and Richard Harrington held a college graduation party in conjunction with her best friend Betsy and Walter Ward for their sons at the local yacht club. Richard and Walter were also two of three partners in a law firm. The couples had decided that everyone that attended the party had to be dressed completely in white.

Sarah and Richard left the party early to return to their summer home less than a mile from the yacht club. They never returned. Shortly after their murders, their bodies were discovered by the young woman that walked the family dog. Soon thereafter, the police were at the graduation party to break the news to the children, twins Simon and Ethan and younger sister Frankie. The third member of the law firm, who had arrived at the yacht club late, stated that he had observed one of the twin boys returning from the parking lot and the vehicle that the twins had driven to the party. The twins had been under suspicion of murder with both accusing the other of the crime.

Ten years later, Frankie is in her last semester of college, ready to receive her inheritance. She stays connected with her brothers, but they have not talked to each other since the investigation of the murders. Frankie wants answers and her family to be whole. She contacted Laurie Moran to see if the television producer would consider investing the cold case and do what she does best, do what the police were unable to do, solve the crime and identify the person responsible for the murders.

About the Authors

Mary Higgins Clark (December 24, 1927 – January 31, 2020) was of Irish descent. Her father died in 1939; he left a widow with three children to support. As the children became old enough to work at odd jobs, they did so. Following graduation from secretarial school, Mary went to work at Remington Rand. There she was a fellow employee of Joseph Keller and Grace Kelly.

Mary’s writing began when she was in high school. Her first published story was the result of a college writing assignment, forty rejections, and six years of trying to sell the story- it sold in 1956. Though Mary continued writing while raising a family and completing a degree at Fordham University in 1971, her first novel was released until January 1, 1975. Over fifty novels would follow in her writing career.

Alafair Burke (October 1969 -) is a professor of law, legal commentator, and American crime novelist with fourteen books in her name only and the Under Suspicion series with Clark. She is the daughter of a school librarian Pearl Pai Chu and crime novelist James Lee Burke. Her work in law includes serving as a judicial clerk in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and as Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney, Portland, Oregon.

Right Behind Her (Bree Taggert series # 4) by Melinda Leigh

Released 2021.09.14   | Finished 2024.03.19   | Borrowed from local public library

Bree Taggert returned to Grey Hollow, Randolph Co, New York following the death of her sister Erin. Erin’s death left her children without an adult to raise them. She had taken the job of sheriff, a job that she was qualified for after having served on the force in Philadelphia. Bree had been raised in this town until her father had killed her mother and then himself when Bree was eight. That incident left Erin and infant brother Adam orphans. The community had a long memory.

Now twenty-seven years later, human bones were discovered on the property that her parents owned. And now, her brother Adam owned the property. Stories quickly race across the county as Bree begins investigating. What is the age of the bones? Was Adam a killer like his father, Jake? Was Jake the killer? Once the bones are determined to be of a woman and a man who both disappeared in June of 1990, Adam’s name comes off the list – he was only month’s old at that time. However, names multiply on that list as it is determined that the woman was a socialite in the county and the man known for his list of crimes. It is also a time period for which Jake Taggert was a suspect.

If the reader gets interested in the tribulations of Bree and her co-workers, there seven books in the series in print with plans for an additional three at this time.

Betrayal (a Robin Lockwood novel) by Phillip Margolin

I know better than to pick up a Margolin when I have a deadline to meet.

Released 2023.11.07   | Finished 2024.02.27| Borrowed from local library

We revisit our past in many ways – sometimes even voluntarily. Robin Lockwood had met Mandy Kerrigan ten years prior in an MMA match. At the time Mandy was on her way to a world title and Robin was a first year law student. It was Robin’s last professional match. Her ambition got in front of advice to her misfortune. It was Robin’s first and only loss.

Now, Robin is a practicing attorney with an exceptionally good reputation and Mandy is a down and out former title holder. She continues to fight because she has no other means of making a living. For a fight – to which Robin and DA friend Tom McGill attend – Mandy’s urine test is positive for drugs, The man she bought the drugs from had promised it would not indicate on a drug test. Her purse and livelihood are in limbo when she tracked the dealer down and put him down with a couple of well-placed punches in front of witnesses. A bystander called the police; however, the dealer, Ryan Finch, did not place charges.

It was not surprising that when the dealer and his family were murdered, the police would find Mandy’s residence. She asked Robin to see her in jail for an opinion, Mandy did not have enough money to cover more than an hour’s consultation. Robin listened to Mandy; then she visited Judge Harold Wright to get an appointment as Mandy’s public defender.

This is the seventh Robin Lockwood novel, following The Third Victim, The Perfect Alibi, A Reasonable Doubt, A Matter of Life and Death, The Darkest Place, and Murder at Black Oaks. The reoccurring characters include DAs Mike Grene and Tom McGill, Detectives Carrie Anders and Roger Dillon, co-council Amanda Jaffe, Associate Loretta Washington, and investigator Ken Breland. One aspect the reader and suspect can expect and appreciate from all of these characters is ethics to a fault and professionalism at what they do. And they respect one another. The reader or suspect wants them on the job.

I know better than to pick up a Margolin when I have a deadline to meet. And yet, I did it again. In a who-done-it with so many suspects, there are so many motives against all the possible suspects – in other words, the ‘victims’ were hardly victims in their everyday lives – it is difficult to choose which one really did it. The reader would really like almost all of the suspects to take the fall.
